Hip Replacement Recalls

DePuy Orthopaedics, acquired by Johnson & Johnson, announced a voluntary recall of its ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing Platforms that were implanted after July 2003 due to problems with the devices that may result in a second hip replacement surgery, call a revision. Artificial hips implanted prior to 2003 are not part of the recall. Patient complaints compiled in a recent report have shown that 1 in 8 patients (12%) who received the ASR resurfacing device and 1 in 8 patients (13%) who received the ASR total hip replacement needed to have a revision surgery.

Patients are encouraged to contact his or her orthopaedic surgeon to identify which device was implanted, as DePuy does not keep a record of patients who have received the device.
